Gendron wraps up Rd. 1 of NCAA men’s golf national championships

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Saint Leo men's golf senior Ryan Gendron wrapped up the first day of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships Monday with a three-over on the Watson Course at Reunion Resort to sit tied for 48th.

Gendron finished his first round at the championships with a 73 (+3) after carding a three-over on the front nine. He concluded his day with a birdie on no. 17 and a bogey on 18 to finish even on the back nine Monday.

Gendron, who is playing in his fourth NCAA national championship, opened the day on no. 1 where he recorded three par's before a bogey on no. 4. The senior from Tampa, Fla. then made back-to-back par's on five and six before a bogey-par-bogey finish to end the front nine with a 38.

The righty opened the back nine with seven par's before his birdie on 17 and his bogey on 18 to close out the day with an even 35 on the back nine. Gendron's 73 matches his second best opening round at the NCAA championships, which he shot to open the 2016 championships in Denver, Colorado.

Florida Southern's John Coultas leads the individual leaderboard with a five-under 65 after 18 holes Monday. On the team side, Barry holds a two-stroke lead over West Florida after shooting a 274 (-6).  

Gendron will head back to the course Tuesday for round two of the NCAA National Championships when he tees off at 1:47 p.m. on the 10th tee.
