Fourth Quarter Flurry Lifts Lions over MIT, 14-5

Seven Lions Score as Lions Engineer Victory over MIT

SAINT LEO, Fla. – A flurry of action in the fourth quarter helped the Saint Leo men's lacrosse team defeat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by a final score of 14-5 on Tuesday evening at University Turf Stadium.  The win advances Saint Leo to a mark of 7-3, while the Engineers of MIT drop to a record of 3-4.

Eric Gendron led the game, posting a five point performance as he tallied a hat trick and two assists on the day.  Behind Gendron's career day, Ryan Burke tallied a hat trick of his own while Matt Obermeyer, Dylan Yonts, and Robert Hutchinson each scored twice.  Kevin Hutchinson and Mike Kavanagh rounded out the goal count for Saint Leo with one apiece.

Contributing to the scoring efforts for Saint Leo, Greg Strobl, Ryan McCarty, Miles Britton, R. Hutchinson, and K. Hutchinson each earned one assist.

Dave Moore earned the win, allowing just five goals and making eight saves in 56:39 minutes of action.  Jesse Leeman closed out the game in cage for Saint Leo.  Their counterpart for MIT, Eric Bartell, allowed 14 goals while making 15 saves on the day.

Will Cothron helped the Lions to their seventh win of the season as he won 18-of-22 faceoff attempts, earning 10 ground balls in the process.  Jake Kavanagh was 1-for-1 at the faceoff-x, helping Saint Leo win 19-of-23 total attempts.  Saint Leo led the shot count, 51-20, as well as dominated the game on the ground, 41-21.  The Lions were successful on 12-of-14 clear attempts, while they shut down the Engineers to just 13 successful clears on 25 total attempts.

MIT was led by Paul Orrson, who tallied two goals and an assist on the night.  Harris Stolzenburg, Michael Traub, and Luke Verdi each scored once, while Stolzenburg, and Traub added on assist apiece.

The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game, but a late push by MIT in the first quarter saw the Engineers rattle off three-straight goals in four minutes of action to pull ahead to a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period.

Saint Leo shut out MIT in the second stanza while posting two goals to pull ahead to a 4-3 lead at the half, and continued to ride its momentum into the third quarter as they outscored the Engineers 3-1.

Entering into the final period with a 7-4 lead, Saint Leo rattled off three straight goals to extend its lead to 10-4 with 11:54 to play in the game.  MIT broke the run with a goal by Stolzenburg at the 10:12 mark, but four more unanswered goals by the Lions closed out the game with Saint Leo holding onto a nine-goal lead.
