Lions Fall in Shooting Battle to No. 13 Florida Southern in Overtime, 11-10

Moore Posts 13 Saves in Sunshine State Conference Shooting Match

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to No. 13 Florida Southern, falling to the Moccasins by a final score of 11-10 on Saturday evening at Bryant Stadium.  The loss drops Saint Leo to a mark of 7-5, and 2-2 in Sunshine State Conference action, while Florida Southern advances to a record of 9-3, and 3-1 in SSC play.

Matt Obermeyer and Miles Britton led the way on the night scoring two goals apiece.  Ryan McCarthy, Dylan Yonts, Ryan Burke, Kevin Hutchinson, Eric Gendron, and Mike Kavanagh scored once apiece.  Hutchinson led the way in assists with a game high three, while Yonts, and Gendron each tallied one.

The Moccasins were led by Dane Sorensen, who scored a game high five goals on the night.  Chris Murphy, Tyler Kuhlman, and Grant VanOverbeke scored two apiece, with VanOverbeke notching the game winner in overtime.

Sophomore Dave Moore notched 13 saves on the night, facing 42 shots and 24 shots on goal in 62:03 minutes of action.  His adversary, Matt Lalli, posted 10 saves while allowing 10 goals on 45 shots and 20 shots on frame.

Will Cothron was key for the Lions, winning 16-of-24 faceoff attempts, and picking up a game best 13 ground balls.  Defensively, Paul Armanda led the team in caused three of the Lions' seven turnovers, while Kavanagh and Moore each collected three ground balls.

It was an all-out battle from the start, with Saint Leo taking a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, but Florida Southern battled back to outscore the Lions 2-1 in the second stanza to notch the score at 4-4 at the half.

The Lions out-scored the Mocs 2-0 in the third quarter, but a strong fourth quarter saw Florida Southern outscore the Lions 6-4 to knot the scoreboard at 10-10 at the end of regulation.

Saint Leo gained possession off of the faceoff entering into overtime, but a turnover by the Lions gave Florida Southern the ball.  The Mocs fired off a shot at the 2:42 mark that was saved by Moore, followed by a shot by Kevin Naslonski that sailed high of the goal.  But VanOverbeke was able to place a shot between the pipes with 1:57 to go in overtime to earn the game-winning goal.

The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, April 12, when they take on Pfeiffer University in regional action.  Game time against the Falcons is set for noon at University Turf Stadium.
