Lions Close Out Regular Season with 11-7 SSC Victory over Rollins

Saint Leo Sinks Tars to Earn Third Seed in SSC Tourney

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team secured the No. 3 seed in the first ever Sunshine State Men's Lacrosse Tournament, sinking the Rollins College Tars by a final score of 11-7 on Tuesday evening to close out the 2014 regular season.  The win advances the Lions' record to 8-6, and 3-2 in SSC action, while the Tars fall to a mark of 6-8, and 2-3 in conference play, earning the No. 4 seed in the tourney.

Dylan Yonts led the way for the Green and Gold, tallying a hat trick and an assist for a four point performance.  Matt Obermeyer and Miles Britton netted two goals apiece, while Kevin Hutchinson, Eric Gendron, Ryan Burke and Matt Weller each scored once.  Hutchinson added two assists on the night, while Gendron earned an assist of his own.

Carson Buell matched Yonts in points, tallying a hat trick of his own and adding an assist to lead the Tars.  Jack Vonarb, Jack Dever, A.J. Gogan, and Nicholas Schultz each scored once, while Morgan Baker, Will Hauver, and Vonarb earned an assist apiece.

The game got off to a slow start as Saint Leo tallied just two goals in the first quarter while holding the Tars off the board for a 2-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.  The Lions outscored the Tars 2-1 in the second stanza, taking a 4-1 lead at the break.

The Tars were not about to back down, and came out of the break with a vengeance as they netted three straight to knot the score at 4-4 with 9:33 left in the third quarter.  But the Lions were able to get their heads back in the game to score three unanswered to close out the third period with a 7-4 lead.

Yonts tallied a man-up goal to open the final stanza, followed by a goal by Britton to give Saint Leo a 9-4 lead with 11:52 left in the game.  Buell scored for the Tars to break the streak, but Hutchinson answered back with an unassisted goal of his own three minutes later to pull the Lions back out to a five goal lead.

Rollins scored two more to pull within three with 4:12 on the clock, but a late goal by Obermeyer off of an assist by Gendron gave the Lions a four goal advantage to close out the game.

Dave Moore picked up the win between the pipes, making 12 saves while allowing just seven goals as he faced 30 shots and 19 shots on cage.  Andrew Sheerin picked up 13 saves for Rollins while allowing 11 goals on the night as he faced 41 shots and 24 shots on goal.

Hutchinson and Dylan D'Airo led the team with four ground balls, while Will Cothron won 10-of-21 faceoff attempts on the night.  Saint Leo won the ground ball battle, 26-18, and were a perfect 20-for-20 on clear attempts.
