Women’s Lacrosse Drops Road Contest to No. 12 Pfeiffer, 12-7

Three Lions Score Two Goals Apiece

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team put up a fight against the 12th-ranked Pfeiffer University Falcons, but were unable to overcome the south region opponent as they fell to the Falcons by a score of 12-7 on Friday afternoon.

The Lions drop to a record of 5-4 on the season, while the Falcons advance their record to 7-2.

Joanna Chadwick, Allie Sheftall, and Kelsey Burns each netted two goals on the day, while Sarah Johnson added one of her own.  Christina Minneci earned the Lions' lone assist.  Kristen McGovern led the team off the draw, earning three draw controls, while Minneci scooped up six ground balls, and Sheftall earned five.

In cage for Saint Leo, Brittany Millsap collected six saves while allowing nine goals in 30 minutes of play.  Kaylyn Kearns closed out the game between the pipes, allowing just three goals while making seven saves on the day.

Their counterpart, Cassidy Wilson, allowed seven goals while earning 12 saves on the day.  Kristina Anderson led the Falcons with a hat trick as a total of eight players contributed the Pfeiffer's goal count.

The Falcons scored first, notching a goal at the 25:49 mark thanks to an unassisted shot by Sara Daly, but Johnson put the Lions on the board five minutes later, knotting the score at 1-1.

Pfeiffer opened up the flood gates two minutes later, going on a six goal run to extend their lead to 7-1 with 6:18 left to play in the first half.  Chadwick broke the streak with an unassisted goal with 2:52 to go, but the Falcons rolled out two more goals to pull ahead 9-2.  Saint Leo was able to net one last goal in the first half as Sheftall scored with 16 seconds on the clock, but the Lions found themselves in a 9-3 hole at the half.

Saint Leo outscored Pfeiffer 4-3 in the second half, but the Lions were unable to pull even despite increased intensity.  Saint Leo closed out the game leading the save count, 13-12 but trailed in the shot count, 31-24.  The Lions were successful on 15-of-23 clear attempts, and beat Pfeiffer in ground balls, 32-29.

The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 25, when they host Adams State.  Game time is set for 4 p.m. at University Turf Stadium.  Fans will be able to follow all of the action live by visiting SaintLeoLions.com.
