Sheftall Scores Hat Trick as Lions Earn South Region Win over Grizzlies
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team got back to its winning ways on Tuesday afternoon at University Turf Stadium, defeating Adams State by a score of 13-4. Sophomore Allie Sheftall scored a hat trick en route to the Lions' regional win, advancing the Lion's record to 6-4, while the Grizzlies drop to a mark of 2-5 on the season.
The Grizzlies were led by Qiana Barfield, who notched three of the four goals for ASU. Kendra Cheda scored one, while Megan Daly earned the team's lone assist on the day.
In cage for Saint Leo, Brittany Millsap allowed just one goal while earning four saves in 30 minutes of action. Kaylyn Kearns allowed two goals while making three saves, while Nicole Sirota-Plotnikov allowed just one goal while setting aside three shots as the duo split time in the second half.
Grace Komatz allowed 13 goals into the back of the net throughout 60 minutes of play, earning nine saves while facing 32 shots and 22 shots on frame from the Lions.
The Lions led the game in draw controls, 14-6, led by Kristen McGovern, Sheftall, and Burns with two apiece. Chadwick and Minneci led the team in ground balls with three each. Minneci and Murray each produced two caused turnovers.
Adams State bit first, scoring at the 24:22 mark thanks to a goal by Cheda, but Chadwick evened the tally two minutes later to get the Lions on the scoreboard. Smigiera netted the go-ahead goal for Saint Leo off of an assist from Johnson, and the Lions never looked back. The Green and Gold opened up to a 6-1 lead by the half, and extended its advantage to as much as nine to close out the game with a final score of 13-4.
The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Thursday, March 27, when they host Fort Lewis College at University Turf Stadium.
